E-Sting Runners Up 2009

Albinal:

This is okay, but I'm not sure its representative of E4 or its values and audience. It would be suitable more for Cartoon Network or Boomerang perhaps.

E-Sting Winner 2009

Cyriak:

This year seems to havereally pushed the bench mark, this is really cool - funky and a little bizarre but nevertheless its engaging and light hearted which reflects the tone of E4 - just look at the Big Bang Theory!

E- Sting Competition 2008

Philip Swaine:

This is a humourous video, incorporating film with some simple animation post production. I can see how this has made it to second prize, its entertaining and engaging.

Tim B and Fred R:

This is a simple but cool motion graphic, with a play on the word discoraphy, animated vinyls, move across the white roll to form the E4 logo. Although this has not incorporated the E4 colour palette it still works.

Terry Lewis:

This is an entertaining sting, a set of images we are all probably familiar with on those cards tucked into the back of the seat in front of you in a plane. This is a much more light hearted take on the visual, incorporating the purple and white colour palette, however, I do feel the logo colours should have not been tampered with.

E-Stings

This is the trailer for the E-Sting competition featuring stings from previous years.

E4 has a competition every year for its viewers to design the latest E-Sting. Teamed up with Creative Review, there is the chance to win a cash prize, and the use of the chosen E-Sting on air.

The rules:

(a) it has to be something E4 can show in the daytime. So ease up on the exploding heads, guts, animal torture, toilet-based unpleasantness, full frontal nudity, etc. We won't be able to show it, which makes all of your lovely effort unfortunately a bit...pointless.
• (b) It HAS to be EXACTLY 10 seconds long. If it's not 10 seconds long IT WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED BY THE JUDGES. Sorry, but we're feeling a bit strict this year. To make things easier we’re providing you with a choice of 10 second audio beds which you are welcome to use in your E STING (but feel free to use something of your own if you prefer!)
• (c) It HAS to have the E4 logo in it... But you probably knew that.

Other than that it can be live-action or animation, big budget or no budget.

ITV2 Ident: Nail Polish

Straight away the visuals suggest this fits in with the moment in a 21 year olds life: nail varnish, shoes, make-up and jewellery. This is done in a very interesting way.
The clip begins with a medium shot of a dressing table with objects on: make-up, nail varnish, perfume and lipstick on, and the ITV 3d logo is placed in the usual, central/ right position of the screen. A hand comes into the shot and takes a bottle away, knocking over the nail varnish which spills onto the shiny white surface (white world with gloss!). [The voice over begins here] The nail varnish becomes a continuously growing 'tube' with branches off it and the objects attached to it. The branches intertwine with each other and the camera pans backwards and down. Again, I could see Cinema 4D being used here.

It's visually very effective, the colours are bright and vibrant, and the three dimensional element works very well.

ITV2 Ident: Buildings

Launched: August 2008

This is a completely CGI approach to the ident, as opposed to the more film based idents. The 3D 'world' looks like it might have been created in a 3D programme like Cinema 4D or even Maya.

With a 3D ITV Logo placed in the centre on the right, the camera swiftly pans in through the 'city' to one of the tall buildings, where a bright strobe light shines brightly out from the side. The camera swiftly snaps back to a long shot of the buildings, before panning in again to a low angle shot, which gives the sense of power and height as more strobes appear on the screen. The camera pans out of the 'city' to a country view, where the strobes can still be seen bursting out of the city.

I am not sure what to think of this ident in terms of it working as a set with the other idents - this doesn't communicate a moment in a 21 year olds life like the others do. It works as an ident in its own right however, the fast sweeping camera movements create energy which reflects the entertaining schedule for the channel, and the colours are interesting and remind me of a jewel, particularly with the crystalline shapes.

ITV2 Ident: Pool

This is a relaxed ident, aired August 2008, but I am not sure if it is still used now. I only seem to see the Dancing Feet!

The shot starts with a birds eye view of a very tanned lady in a bikini sunbathing who stands out against the white surroundings to a clean looking swimming pool, with a three dimensional ITV 2 logo that moves on to the diving board, with a splash sound as though someone has dived in. Then patterns begin to emerge from the wall of the pool along the floor, which incorporates a pattern of someone pushing off from the wall while swimming.

TRON!

Made by Man vs Machine!

Absolutely loved the graphics in Tron! I would love to make something as visually stunning as the title/logo - I love the use of lights, especially blue ones, they have a really futuristic feel to them. Look at this, its just...wow:

The colours and shapes of the type work great together, it's a really bold, strong visual. The chunkiness of the text almost reminds me of the Transformers logo.

This is similar in style to how the ITV ident will be - a motion graphic within a space. I love the simplicity of this.

Man Vs Machine

I have blogged them before and I will blog them again! These guys are behind the new More 4 rebrand consisting of colourful flipping triangles to represent the diversity of the programmes on the channel. I myself am still undecided on the different colours, it communicates their values but there's just something about it I am not sure on.

A number of live idents showing real flipping triangles out in the real world have been filmed. They were installations by Jason Bruges studio, and can be seen here:

This is a re-vamp they did for T4, the entertainment part of Channel 4. They produced a set of idents which are quite humorous, and made me smile when watching. The ideas are based on combining everyday objects with scenes:

Just beautiful. It speaks to the young 16-25 year olds that might watch T4!

ITV 2 Ident: Dancing Feet

This ident is exactly what the brief is asking for - vibrant colours, white world (with gloss!!) and a typical moment in the life of a 21 year old!

This looks like the kind of ident I'd like to make although my technical ability would not allow me to do this. It looks as if it may have involved green screen, perspex for the dancing soles, and possibly a white studio/scoop.
If I was to create an ident to be part of this, I would have to use Cinema 4D to create the white space, and a green screen to use the film footage. This may be too complex but I will go try my luck with Cinema 4D first...

Eternal Law Title Sequence

Eternal Law is a drama series on ITV, now I wouldn't say that the visual is entirely appropriate for the content but I love the style of it, it has a children's storybook feel to it, especially with the backing music and narration. The music reminds me of some of the queue music at Alton Towers.

The only link I can find for it is the ITV player:

http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=301934

I found it incredibly hard to take screen shots from the ITV player...

David Blaine Titles

By The LSD Group: From 0:37 to 0:59 This is quite an impressive motion graphic, relating to one of his famous tricks involving a bullet. It cleverly comes in as the audience sees the trick being set up, just as the trigger of the gun is pulled the screen freezes and 'to be continued' appears - this is where the motion starts. A bullet with the initials db on moves in slow motion while rotating, being followed by the camera, with a glowing orb around it. It goes through the King of Diamonds as it speeds up, leaving a whole in the card, as it comes through the other side the camera pans around to the other side of the card, as the viewers see, the patterned side of the card with small pieces being blown away and a hole in the card. Through the debris, the letters for David Blaine's name begins to appear, the camera is viewing from the back, the camera moves around the object in this 3D space 180 degrees so it faces the front. (This part looks really cool). The last d and b in David's name are joined- to make a spade, very appropriate. There is a spot light effect on the text, and the debris blows across from left to right.

Discovery Refresh

The Discovery Channel (US) underwent a refresh last year, this is a montage of some of the promo spots and idents, it looks very fresh, with some high impact short bursts of motion which gives it an energetic, up to date feel.

Eurosports Rebrand

This movie shows all of the Eurosports rebrand elements - the main focus is the 3D arrows that rotate into the banners that contain programme information. This is a much more modern version than the previous one. The colours of the stars have changed to white which brightens the logo and the blue has lightened - not forgetting the change in font for Eurosport. The pop up banner for major events now features a video excerpt, a clever way of keeping the audience engaged, and it looks good too. The in-programme information has also had a revamp. The branding will also be carried across on to the off-air, printables e.g. double sided business cards. Even more innovative is the concept involving 6 actors expressing 6 different emotions - one actor will then be combined with the movie of three different Eurosport featured sports in a montage to create an ident. The end result is incredibly effective.

BBC2 Christmas Ident

An example of the BBC/Red Bee Media living up to their expectations of sheer brilliance. The image below really sets the Christmassy scene and you can just imagine how good the ident will look:
Flying turkeys, houses, a church, floating gingerbread men, this is a carefully developed BBC2 world, with some magical almost Harry Potter style music at the beginning which is quite delicate until the orchestral crescendo feeds in as the camera slowly pans out. I love this.

Fox Christmas

How appropriate... A bloody, gory Christmas tree! A cool way of promoting Crime on the Fox International channel. I love the way the camera appears to move the blood, it almost immerses you into it - which isn't all that nice really.

Doctor Who Christmas Ident

A very Christmassy ident - pleasant visuals and a humourous concept. Still featuring the circular motion, like the globe from the older BBC days.
